Last summer my youngest son and I watched the Harry Potter series and he fell in love. Everything about it. The sights and sounds, magic and wizards, the places and the people. You name it, it was amazing. So, it was no surprise when he asked me for a Harry Potter themed birthday party. Except he wanted to make sure it wasn't just an ordinary party, he wanted to make sure when he walked into the house, we were transformed in to Hogwarts.
If you've seen the movies or read the books, then you know the importance of the platform 9 3/4. So, I had to make sure all our little wizards arrived safely and created our own platform 9 3/4 along with a directional sign so no one got lost.
Creating the entrance was very simple but, it did take some planning and extra time. After a bit of research and help from Pinterest, I got to work and headed to the hardwood store for wood and supplies.
To create the directional sign, I used a single 1 x 4 piece of wood for the post along with a 2 x 4 and a 2 x 6 piece of wood. I drew out the designs and shapes of each sign with a pencil and with the help of my dad, he cut out the pieces for me.
After sanding the edges down, I applied two different stain colors, one light, and one darker. I waited a few days to let them dry completely. Using my Cricut machine I cut out the names of specific areas of the Wizarding World we wanted to feature. I used Mod Podge over each plank to seal and secure the vinyl decals. It was going to be used outside and I didn't want that hard work to get ruined.
I added a giant spider, leftover from Halloween, because we all know who lives deep inside the Forbidden Forest.
To cover the door, I ordered this brick patterned paper from Amazon, I just measured it and fit to my door. So simple and works perfectly. Using a large wood round, I stained it and added a vinyl decal I found on one of my Harry Potter fandom sites and voila! A perfect platform sign!
Now you too can create a perfect entrance to your magical wizarding world birthday party or maybe just because.
