Mason Jar Hanging Wall Lantern

Are you wanting to add a bit of a rustic touch to your home decor? We have been slowly updating our home decor style but adding in a touch of rustic farmhouse to our living room and kitchen areas. I am in love with all the amazing farmhouse decor items out there but it's not in our budget at the moment. So, I've been crafting up some awesome decor myself, like this mason jar hanging wall lantern, and I could not be happier.

Not long ago, my mom created her own Mason Jar Wall Lantern and I loved it. I knew I wanted to create one, or two, for myself and I knew exactly where I would put it in my kitchen. My mom already had some scrap wood when she created hers, so I just had to figure out my own measurements based on where I wanted to hang them. I headed straight to the store to purchase everything I needed.

It was so easy to complete and only took about an afternoon to complete two lanterns. I wasn't sure what I wanted to add to them so I searched pinterest to find some amazing inspiration for lantern fillers, but I am still not sure what I want to put in them. I kind of like them they way they are or maybe ad some greenery to them.

What you need:

  • 1 - 1in x 6in x 32in piece of wood; cut in half (I purchased a 1in x 6in x 6ft and cut down)
  • Wood stain
  • Stain cloth
  • Sandpaper
  • Hammer
  • Screwdriver
  • Picture Sawtooth hangers
  • Decorative Hooks
  • Mason jar with wire hanger (hanger kit available at craft store; I purchased a mason jar with wire hanger attached)
  • Paper towels for clean up

How to Make:

1. Cut your wood into two 16 inch pieces.
2. Sand edges using sandpaper.

3. Stain wood using cloth. Be sure to stain on all sides. Let dry a few hours and apply a second coat.
4. Let dry at least 3-4 hours if not overnight.

5. Flip pieces of wood onto back and attach saw tooth picture hangers.

6. Flip back to front and attach decorative hooks to front. I measured down about 4 1/2 inches and pre-drilled my holes first, then attached the hooks with accompanying screws.

7. If your jar does not already come with the hanging kit attached, be sure to attach it now and then hang your jar from the hook.

8. Add a candle, flowers, etc. for decoration to complete your lanter.
